Intent
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with discrimination and most importantly – enjoyment!
Implementation
At FoG, children can achieve by listening and appreciating different styles of music and how it can influence people in different ways following and enhancing our music scheme, Kapow. It helps us to relax, make us feel happy or even change our mood entirely. In EYFS and KS1 pupils begin to develop essential musicianship skills such as rhythm, pulse, beat and pitch in addition to lots of listening, appraising and enjoying! They have the perfect opportunity to showcase this at our annual Nativity play. The Key Stage 2 music curriculum builds on these skills and also incorporates singing in unison and in parts, instrumental performance, composition and music history. Children also take part in collective singing daily during assembly and this is dedicated to improving vocal technique, understanding how music is put together and improving the standard of singing across school.
Impact We create Music throughout our day at FoG encompassing it within lots of our daily routines. Our regular Music lessons allow children the opportunity to learn in depth about composers and different periods in musical history, perform to each other and across school and perform in community and national events such as Young Voices in Sheffield Arena. Performing to others is an important part of our pupils’ musical development and we look forward to creating lots of different performance opportunities for our children in the future.
